Replacement fuel pump for Windsor 302 query
« on: October 14, 2020, 11:32:54 AM »
It appears that the mechanical fuel pump is the source of a minor but annoying oil leak in my ('71 I think?) Windsor 302, which resides in my '67. It's not at the base gasket but rather seems to be seeping from the connection between the cast metal top section and the pressed metal lower section.

I've looked on eBay for a replacement and I see numerous brands, and a range of prices from say $65 up to about four times that amount.

Thanks to Covid-19, I don't want to go silly with $$$, nor do I want to over-spec (or under-spec) with the gph rating which is quoted with some ads and I wouldn't know what a rebuilt mild 302 with a Holley 600 needs anyway.

Any recommendations? TIA

From looking online it seems this location for a leak is not uncommon with a Windsor pump. Certainly took me a while to find it. It may be that the crimping swage just needs crimping tighter, and sealing up, so I'll try that before digging out $$$ and buying a new pump.

I paid lots of $$$ for an Edelbrock pump, the one with the Allen screws. They kept coming loose causing it to leak 😭, so now Iíve been running a Carter for about 6 years. Havenít had any problems on my 302/331 with Holley 600

I have one you can have for the cost of postage from Mackay.  Took it off a 289 as I thought it was the problem - not so - turned out to be carb mixture screws turned in too far.  Was fine up to the time of removal.  Has the name " PIERCE " on the side.  Tube connection threads are good.  Send P M with email address & I'll send pics to check.

Typically the carter pumps have a seal at the top of the diaphragm on top of the return spring that stops engine oil coming out of the top of the pump - the spring pressure pushes the seal against the body and seals - if it's leaking engine oil (not fuel), then the diaphragm seal is toast on either the diaphragm stem or the diaphragm/body connection - crimping it tighter won't affect either of these as it only affects the diaphragm/valve-body seal, and the upper housing will have a breather that allows oil to vapor out and coat everything....
