66 289 Engine Colour
« on: March 14, 2018, 06:24:17 AM »
There are so many chats about 66 Mustang 289 engine colour I just cant seem to find the right answer.  Can I ask what is the correct engine colour for a 66 GT 289 and where in Melbourne can I buy the paint.

Unfortunately the Corporate Blue is for 67 onwards.  However the 66 engine color is slight different. If you call Griffs in Ballarat they have the engine color in a spray can which is pretty close to the concourse correct color.

Have now converted the other half into doing some of the Concours washin, cleaning & polishing stuff!!!!!!!!

Just called Griffs.  No longer stock it.  Very hard to get.  Called various other suppliers but same answer.  Luckily I have an original air cleaner so I will try and get that matched at a t paint shop.

Are you trying to make it 100% concours correct?

No, actually red was the color of the fire engine that came over to his house to put his Mustang flambe' out.  :bolt:

Alternatively you cane use VHT - New Ford Blue which is pretty close as well

plastikote royal blue 1134 is the closest overall, however, the color wasn't exactly the same shade on all the engines due to variances in the color in different batches etc.

I'm not going full concourse but I wanted to stay true to originality of the car.  I dont want to lift the bonnet and the first thing you see is the wrong colour on the engine.

I'll have a look at the plastikote royal blue 1134 and see how it compares.

Give Mustang Auto Parts in Brisbane a call. They used to mix their own rattle cans. Used one on my 66 but that was over ten years ago now.

Forget about spray cans none of them are even close to correct, take your air filter in to a paint shop and have them eye match it in 2 pack industrial enamel. I found a perfect sample on the underside of the snorkel, polished it up and took it to the paint store, turned out great and is a hundred times more durable than any spray can paint, plus they can give you a formula so next time you can get more and it will be a perfect match.

Hi 'Herman' I have attached some photos of the painted engine.  I have left the water pump as original as it is not a genuine pump.  Also the light tends not to show the true colour in real life but you can get an idea.

I would check the vacuum chamber on your distributor to see if it works if you haven't.
