Decode 66 Mustang Engine Numbers
« on: January 12, 2018, 08:13:32 PM »
Hi all, I have a 66 GT Coupe.  Built in Late October 65 'K' I was wondering if my engine would be original to the vehicle.  What I can discover is that the engine casting (C5AE-6015E) tells me the engine was originally designed for a Galaxie, is this the case?  The engine number (4K6F) tells me it was built in 1964.  Does all this seem correct for my 66 GT or is it the case that its not likely to be the original engine.

I think it was cast on the 4 of the 10th 65 and built a month later

What are the numbers above the C5AE-6015-E in the first pic? Can't read them. They are the casting date.

A '66 had no engine number so if its the original engine that number has been added for rego purposes.
What's the VIN (or more correctly chassis number) and build date of your car?

The A in C5AE-6015-E does designate it as intended for a "full size" Ford like a Galaxie but doesn't really mean anything as engine blocks weren't really car specific. Theoretically a Mustang engine would be Z where the A is but I'm not sure there were any Z castings.

The 5 would indicate a '65 casting but that casting code was used in Mustangs from '65 to '67'and the tired old 289 from mine sitting in the corner of my garage has the same code. See http://www.mustangandfords.com/parts/mump-1203-hi-po-engine-id-guide/ and http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-to/engine/mump-0505-289-high-performance-small-block-mustang-engine/

It looks like the casting number are '4JB' but its a little hard to define without pulling my starter motor off again.  I thought that there were also no engine numbers until it was pointed out to me that there was a stamping on the engine just above the area of the power steering pump as depicted.

With the cast date on the block of 4JB seems that the engine was cast in 1964 and that it is not the correct engine from original?

An engine number was stamped on this engine for rego purposes but this was done at the rear of the engine and the number they stamped was the Vin number.

The cast date is day and month I think, the C5 gives the year 65 so I think its 65  4th day 10  month, the stamp on the top deck is  the assembly date one month later which would make sense. I think its the correct engine it has never had the block faced other wise the stamping on the top would be gone. So if the car seems a low mile car I think it matches.

Thanks guys.  Phil I'm of the same opinion as I believe the Casting number C5AE..... does not mean it was cast in 1965.  Its only a part number as such and not defined as the year of manufacture. (I think)

cheers

Interesting! Most 289s have that casting number, obviously Ford didnít change each casting number for every different model car!

But the date above it is the build date - rule of thumb is that date is within 6 weeks of the build of your car! It should more of less be the original engine for that car

My bet is get a marti report and find the build date (deluxe report or higher)

Remember if your car was build for example early January 66 then 6weeks brings it back to end of 65, so your block will have for example November
