1966 Mustang Decode Body No's
« on: November 05, 2016, 01:10:03 PM »
Can anyone assist with Decoding these body numbers.  The VIN shows the car was made in San Diego however my rough interpretation of the Firewall code is September 21, Dearborn Built 3rd Shift?  Is this right, if so the car was built in San Diego according to VIN????? (Whats going on)

Not sure how to decode Fender Apron but it also has the letter 'D'.  The Bonnet I believe is after market as I'm pretty sure it has been replaced but I don't know what the code means.

Great if you can help
Cheers guys

Your car was built in San Jose California, not San Diego. The sheet metal dates you have are as you thought,21sept, but your  vin number 121xxx would of been  Built around October  66, which is all correct The door tag  should be K for October. And your is hood is a repo. Also your wasn't built on the third shift, just the panel your referring to  all mustang panels have date codes .http://www.mustangtek.com/

Correct, the car has been on here for discussion over the last few weeks.  I finally got a chance to see the car in person (9 hour drive) so I gathered some more information.  (My mistake, San Jose not Diego) Your feedback re October built car is valuable as my suspicion over the door tag is right.  The build Date and axle ration are not correct.  The door tag says its an April build (Wrong) and the Axle ration of '7' which there were no code 7's for a 1966 model as far as I can find.  The door tag is obliviously a repo but with the wrong info.  One other thing that puzzled me is the Tag on the Steering box.  It says its a 1965 but the October build date matches was you said about being an October built car going by the numbers on the firewall.  My best guess its not the correct steering box for this model car???
Your thoughts and comments??

Cheers guys

Having re-read your posts, The steering box seems consistent with the 65 October built body.  Am I right in saying that mustangs built late in the year (As this one was built Oct 65) they sell them as the next year model ie: the VIN code on this car is 6RO7A.........

If that's the case all of the stamps appear consistent but the Door tag is obviously the issue.

True, my door tag is months out from the VIN so I'm suspicious about all the other repo plate details, maybe the door has been replaced and the previous owner had made up a new plate with the VIN of the car and the rest of the details from the replacement door?

That''s possible.  One final question, going by the firewall date code, the steering box date code and the fact that the VIN consecutive numbers put the car in the October 1965, (notwithstanding that the car is given a 1966 VIN for the following year) what month should the Door Tag be?  Currently its June 1966 but what should it be given the date codes as mentioned above?

cheers

You can call kevin marti and he may or may not tell you but he definitely knows what would be most likely. You could also ask on the concours mustang forum but based on the VIN, it looks like October 65 as GT HI PO mentioned and the 12th day should be reasonable.
