A Cheaper way of Importing in early 2008
« on: October 05, 2007, 12:07:28 PM »
I will be travelling to LA at about Xmas time to purchase a car for myself. I have a contact in LA who is a classic car enthusiast with over 30 years experience as a mechanic. He will be assisting me in sourcing a suitable car.

Rather than using a importer I will be hiring my own container which will take 2 or 3 cars plus a multitude of parts or some motorcycles.

To offset my costs I will be able to include 1 or 2 cars for $2500 for one car or $4500  for two cars.(plus GST and any customs charges). I will assist in obtaining DOTARS approval.

With the high value of the Aussie dollar against the US dollar there has never been a better time to import a car (effectively they are 25% cheaper than 12 months ago with the
appreciating Aussie dollar)

You will be making a considerable saving over the commercial
importers  with a far higher degree of care.

If you are intersted please contact me ASAP as I anticipate considerable interest

Yes  some tentative enquiry and with the Aussie dollar now over 90c US and tipped to perhaps be parity  by Xmas probably the best time ever to import privately.

A pre 1977 US $9000 car  could be landed for under $14,500 AUD  including freight,  customs charges at both ends and GST.

As container can take up to 26,5000 kg can bring in parts for $1 per kg  with a minimum of $50 per order.

Further to my previous post I have been able to clarify the costs of importing

Presuming that have purchased a pre 77 Ford Mustang for $9,000 US ( about A$10,000) which should enable you to purchase a car in good running order needing only minimal work for local registration. craigslist.com (LosAngeles) and ebay usa had many suitable cars valued at lest than $9000, some restoration  projects for as little as $2000.

A good quality Ford Ranchero ute  could be purchased for considerably less and would be the ultimate  "tradies" toy.

Presuming exchange rate A$1=90c US

Purchase price                  $10,000A
US Customs Fee               $     137.50A (approx)
Freight                     $ 2,500A
Insurance                       $   150A (approx)
Subtotal                  $12,787.50

 GST                        $1,287
Dotars fee                  $    50
Our fee 5%                          $  500
Pre purchase inspection (if required)      $  150 (approx)
Total                         $14,774.505

Depending on condition of car and requirements I have been quoted between $300 and $1000 to get blue slip, will depend to some extent on age of car.

Compare what you can buy locally with an import. Hope this will assist

Some good new.

With confirmation of a lower freight rate and the approach by a Harley group to bring in some pre 1989 bikes and parts  the container can be utilised more efficiently.

Can now reduce freight rate by 10)% to $2250 per car.

Some interest so far  ( more interest from Harley Davidson site) but with Aussie Dollar  now at US 92.7c  and tipped to be parity by Xmas anticipate more interest.

If dollar continues to rise  will be far cheaper to get equivalent quality car in US.  For something different can purchase good quality Ranchero ute for about $6k US
